Domestic Violence and Suicide Prevention

PEO STRI Employee Information

Recent news stories re-emphasize the unpleasant truth that military and civilian personnel and their families are not immune to problems of domestic violence. Nor, unfortunately, are we immune to the tragic loss of life associated with suicide.

The military establishment has created an extensive program to offer assistance to victims of domestic violence and to take action against offenders - where the offender is a military member. There are also programs for assisting members who may be contemplating suicide.

Some of these same programs, and others, ar available to civilian employees and/or their family members who have been, or fear they may be, victims of domestic violence or suicide.

In addition to resources available on the Internet and through the local telephone directory, PEO STRI employees and their family members have access to a screening and referral contractor called Leading Edge. Leading Edge is under contract to NAWCTSD through the Human Resources Office to receive calls from concerned employees and family members and direct them to helping resources.

The initial screening and referral call is free. Some helping resources may also be free while others may charge for their services.

Civilian employees and military members and their families also have access to Family Advocacy Programs, the closest of which are associated with Air Force bases in Florida.

Employees or family members who have been, or fear they may be, victims of domestic violence, or concerned about potential suicide involving themselves, coworkers, family members or friends are encouraged to call Leading Edge or call the appropriate number or click the appropriate button below for additional resources. Please note: You may be asked to identify yourself and your employer. This is only to confirm that you are eligible for the service. Your confidentiality will be preserved.

Supervisors or employees of PEO STRI who are contacted by employees or their family members concerning fears of domestic violence or suicide should NOT attempt to counsel or discuss with the other party (e.g. your employee, if the spouse is the one who contacts you). Instead they should advise the caller of the availability of the Leading Edge contractor and other resources and provide the telephone numbers above. In addition, make a note of the conversation, including specific concerns voiced and recommendations made and advise higher level supervisors, the Human Resource Management Division, and Legal Counsel as deemed appropriate.
