Remotely Piloted Vehicle Target (RPVT)

Project Director: Brian Whitaker
Project Office: PM ITTS Targets Management Office

MISSION:

The MQM-170 Outlaw RPVT is currently the backbone of the Air Defense Artillery (ADA) Targets project. Competitively procured, the Outlaw series of aerial targets have been used for training and qualification of ADA missile and gun crews for over 30 years. It is a low-cost, highly-maneuverable, portable system.

DESCRIPTION:

The Outlaw RPVT is a flight-proven unmanned aircraft that has flown more than 92,000 sorties to date. The system is managed by the Targets Management Office (TMO) to support the air defense training requirements for the U.S. Army, other U.S. DoD agencies and allied foreign military customers. Capable of numerous types of missions, the Outlaw’s fixed-wing aerial platform and support equipment provide targeting solutions for tracking and live-fire for gun and missile crews. The Outlaw’s low cost, tactical size, superior maneuverability and multi-mission capability make it the preferred aerial target for the air defense community. The Outlaw’s beyond-visual-range control capability makes it ideal as a representative small unmanned aircraft system for technology demonstrations, test events, and Force Development Test and Experimentation activities. Other mission payload kits are available to provide radar and infrared signature enhancement, scoring, Multiple Integrated Laser Engagement System (MILES) engagements, smoke operations, and carrying of small avionic packages such as range transponders and customer emitters. Outlaw is controlled manually, beyond-visual-range with autopilot and waypoint navigation or satellite communications data link.
