Mission
Synthetic Training Environment - Live Training System (STE-LTS) is the Army’s next generation live training system. At the center of STE-LTS is the development of the 12 engagement types and 5 instrumentation enablers ("12+5"). STE-LTS will provide new and improved capabilities incrementally, starting with the CTCs, for addressing live training engagement gaps. STE-LTS Increment 1(Inc 1) will address mature technologies associated with indirect fire, placed objects, thrown objects, and guided weapons to fill existing live training gaps.
The Mortar Training System is to provide realistic replication of all actions taken by a mortar crew and provide proper weapon effects within high-fidelity Force-on-Force training, allowing users to develop the skills and confidence needed to engage enemy units while minimizing the risks and costs associated with live-fire training.
Description
The STE-LTS Mortar Training System enables indirect fires effects from mortars to be delivered in to Force on Force Live Training events through actions taken by mortar teams and delivery of effects in real-time to the battlefield. This provides value to mortar crews, forward observers, and maneuver units both being supported or engaged by the mortar TESS through increased realism by requiring coordination of activities to deliver effects on targets, and appropriate actions when engaged by indirect fires. The Mortar TESS is compatible with the M224 60mm and M252 81mm, and through integration with CTC-IS, can deliver effects to any TESS equipped Soldier or vehicle on the training battlefield.
The Indirect Fire solution comprises a 60/81mm surrogate mortar tube, a Smart Cannon Module (SCM), training mortar rounds, and the Enhanced Player Interface Module (EPIM). The system leverages the tactical base plate, mortar mount, and sights. STE-LTS mortar cannons have an under-sized inner diameter and will not accept live ammunition.
